Excellence in research - International ERC and Bejczy Day 2017

Bejczy day

As of the 10-year jubilee of the European Research Council’s ERC Starting and Advanced Grant program, the Obuda University organizes a symposium based on our only ERC StG grant and celebrating as well being members of the elite group of Starting Grant host institutions.

Furthermore, paying tribute to Prof. Dr. Antal Bejczy physicist, chief researcher of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, affiliate professor of the Washington University in St. Louis, the outstanding character of international space research and robotics, Óbuda University Antal Bejczy Center for Intelligent Robotics (IROB) pronounced 16th of January the IROB International Bejczy Day.

In memoriam of the birthday of the honorary professor of Óbuda University, antal Bejczy and celebrating the ERC excellence in research, the EKIK organizes an international scientific day March 3 Friday, 2017, where renowned robotics and biomedical engineering experts share their views and latest results. The annual Award Ceremony of the Antal Bejczy Student Publication Prize will also take place.

15th SAMI conference

The newest results of the ERC StG "Tamed Cancer" project has been presented at the 15th IEEE SAMI (IEEE 15th International Symposium on Applied Machine Intelligence and Informatics) conference.

At the jubilee Hungarian-Slovakian symposium organized by the Obuda University and the IEEE Hungary Section we have presented a minimal model of tumor growth with angiogenic inhibition. The validit of the developed model was demonstrated by real measured results.

New Technical Committee has been created under the IEEE SMC Society led by researchers of the Obuda University

IEEE SMC Cyber-Medical Systems

From the 36 societies of the IEEE (the biggest engineering non-profit society of the World with more than 400.000 members), one of the most active one, the IEEE Systems Man and Cybernetics (SMC) Society, has approved a new Technical Committee (TC) under the Cybernetics branch, named as Cyber-Medical Systems (CMS).

The TC was initiated by two professors of the Obuda University, Dr. habil. Levente Kovács and Dr. Imre Rudas at the beginning of 2016 and the SMC board investigated at different levels before acceptance the TC’s technical novelty, relevance and the international scientific impact of its proposed members.

The aim of the approved TC is to serve its members and the society at large by promoting the theory and practice of personalized healthcare. Cyber-Medical Systems connects physical healthcare systems with computational components, a case of special smart systems involving topics of model-based healthcare treatments, physiological control systems, medical knowledge-based systems, medical robotics, cloud computing.

The TC’s members are represented by 49 researchers throughout the world with a declared aim of strengthening the intelligent healthcare research directions both from academic (high impact publications, corresponding special sessions at relevant international conferences) and industrial fields. However, the TC is opened to anybody willing to actively support the declared research directions.

The chairs of the TC are professors Dr. habil. Levente Kovács and Dr. Imre Rudas from Obuda University, Dr. Hamido Fujita from Japan and Dr. Clara Ionescu from Belgium. More information can be found on the official web-page of the TC, http://www.ieeesmc.org/technical-activities/cybernetics/cyber-medical-sy....

We congratulate for the approval and wishing success in the further work!

Kick off meeting of the European Research Council (ERC) granted project Tamed Cancer at the Óbuda University

ERC kick off

Kick off meeting of the ERC granted project held by the leader of the Physiological Controls Knowledge Center, Dr. habil. Levente Kovács, took place in the central building of the university, in room Pauli, F.09 at 19th of July, 2016.

The grant, which is a scientific excellence grant sponsored by the European Union (EU), is the first won Horizon 2020 grant at our university. The EU has created the ERC excellence research grants to sponsor the development of competitive research institutions that can cope with research facilities in the USA, Japan or the uprising China, by demanding high risk, high gain, and highly productive projects.

In 2015, out of 1490 applications in the domain of Physical Sciences and Engineering, the European Research Council has decided to fund 143 grants, containing 3 grants with grant holders being Hungarian researchers. Although, out of the 3 Hungarian researchers, only 2 (including Levente) has decided to carry out their research in Hungary. However, in the field of Computer Science and Informatics, Levente’s grant is the first Hungarian grant that has been approved since the foundation of ERC in 2007.

Dr. habil. Levente Kovács, vice dean of education of the John von Neumann Faculty of Informatics, has presented the start of the project and exposed the administration and technical tasks of the initial time period.

The highlight of the research is an interdisciplinary field made up by combining medical and engineering sciences; the aim of the research is to provide an alternative to cancer therapies. This will be achieved by using automated algorithms based on targeted molecular therapy, in order to minimize the cost of the therapy by applying the optimal amount of drug, while maximizing the quality of the therapy (i.e. the life span of the patient).

The full name of the 5-year long ERC Starting grant is Personalized Cancer Therapy by Model-based Optimal Robust Algorithm, or Tamed Cancer in short, that has received a funding of more than 1 million euros. The Óbuda Univesity has 90% share of this funding, while the 1st Department of Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research lead by Prof. Dr. Zoltán Sápi in Semmelweis University receives 10% of the funding.

Levente Kovács won the ERC StG grant named Tamed Cancer

Tamed Cancer

Tamed Cancer is the first H2020 grant in the Obuda University's history. It was won by Prof. Dr. Levente Kovács, who is the head of Physiological Controls Group (Research and Innovation Center of Obuda University).

The project has started in 01.07.2016, the duration of the project is 5 years. The grant amount is approximately EUR 1 million, the host institution is Obuda University, Hungary and additional beneficiary is Semmelweis University, Hungary (1st Department of Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research with the leadership of Prof. Dr. Zoltán Sápi (Professor of Pathology, Deputy Head)).

Levente Kovács reached the ERC StG second round

The ERC research calls represent the most competitive individual research calls of the European Council. Year by year Europe's best researchers are competing in three categories (starting, consolidator and advanced).

The aim of the ERC is to provide long-term financing for high-gain high-risk researches that could increase Europe's research competence. The ERC support form is unique from several points of view in the EU's research programmes.

Levente Kovács reached the ERC StG second round

The "only" requirement is the scientific excellence of the applicant (principal investigator - PI). Important priority is to help the PI reaching his researcher independence mostly by creating or consolidating his own research group and research idea (http://mta.hu/erc)

In the two-stage application process the success rate is very low, 10-12%, especially due the first stage "survival" rate (only approximately 20% of the submitted proposals are selected for the second round).

Among the yearly best researchers' applications, in 2015 the leader of the PhysCon research group and center, Dr. habil. Levente Kovacs was invited in the staring grant (StG) category for the second round interview with his innovative research idea. This gives him the opportunity to present live his proposal in the front of the ERC StG research panel.
